About Kovalev & Partners

Kovalev & Partners LLC has been working since 2015. We act for companies and private clients: commercial and corporate disputes, insolvency, tax audits, transactions, family and inheritance matters.

We have brought together in one firm what a client normally has to assemble piece by piece: litigators, advocates, valuers, auditors and insolvency practitioners. In a complex matter there is no need to explain your situation again to every new contractor.

How we are organised

One team per matter. Every matter has a partner who is answerable for it. He assembles the group for the task and remains your point of contact until the end.

Lawyers and advocates together. Some tasks require the status of an advocate: criminal defence, attendance at searches and interviews. Those instructions are carried out by advocates of the Kovalev, Malyutov, Tsypkalo & Partners Moscow Bar Association, with which we have an agreement. For the client that is a single point of entry rather than two separate engagements in two different places.

Valuation and audit in house. We prepare valuation reports and auditors' opinions ourselves and defend them in the very proceedings they were made for.

What sets us apart

The forecast comes before the money. You get our assessment of the prospects at the first consultation — before the engagement is signed.

We do not promise results. The outcome of litigation cannot be promised, and anyone who does is selling an illusion. We are answerable for the quality of the work, for the pace and for making sure you always know what stage the matter is at.

We do the maths on the dispute. Sometimes the right advice is not to litigate. We give it even where it costs us the fee for the proceedings.

We work with large sums and complex structures. Our practice includes M&A transactions of national scale, tax disputes running into hundreds of millions of roubles and claims in the billions.

The firm works alongside advocates continuously, not case by case. Legal review, transactions, insolvency and representation in commercial and civil proceedings are carried out by the in-house lawyers of Kovalev & Partners LLC. Advocates' assistance is provided by advocates of the Bar Association: the company is a law firm, not a bar formation within the meaning of art. 20 of Federal Law No. 63-FZ of 31 May 2002 “On Advocacy and the Bar in the Russian Federation”.

Some legal tasks may be carried out only by an advocate: defence in a criminal case (Article 49 of the Code of Criminal Procedure), acting as defence counsel in administrative offence proceedings (Article 25.5 of the Administrative Offences Code), issuing an advocate's formal request (Article 6.1 of Federal Law No. 63-FZ on Advocacy). Those tasks are handled by advocates of the Kovalev, Malyutov, Tsypkalo & Partners Moscow Bar Association: the company and the Bar Association have a cooperation agreement, so we assemble the team ourselves and the client does not have to find defence counsel separately.

How it works in practice

1. You come to us and we determine what help you need and whether it requires the status of an advocate.
2. If it does, we introduce you to an advocate of the Bar Association who specialises in your issue.
3. You sign the agreement on the provision of legal assistance directly with the advocate, and the fee is paid into the Bar Association's cash desk or bank account.
4. Other services (legal review, transaction support, representation in commercial and civil proceedings, advisory work) are provided by Kovalev & Partners LLC under its own engagement.

Information you give to an advocate is covered by advocate–client privilege (art. 8 of Federal Law No. 63-FZ of 31 May 2002). We have no access to it without your written consent.

The advocates of the Kovalev, Malyutov, Tsypkalo & Partners Moscow Bar Association working in the Moscow office are entered in the register of advocates of the City of Moscow; those in the Mariupol office are entered in the register of advocates of the Donetsk People’s Republic. The status of each may be verified in the relevant register on the website of the respective chamber of advocates.
